Job Description:
Reporting to the SAVES Project Director, the Attorney Advisor will provide leadership, support, and resources to increase safe access to child support and parenting time services for victims/survivors of intimate partner violence and their children through advocacy, training, technical assistance, public awareness, and research. This is a grant funded position, classified as an attorney advisor.
Responsibilities:
- Provide individual consultation and technical assistance.
- Develop and conduct training on issues related to gender-based violence, child support, and parenting time.
- Research and provide analysis of state and federal laws, regulations, policies, and practices related to child support, family violence, family court, child welfare, and other issues related to the intersection of families and GBV.
- Participate in the development, review, and editing of technical assistance materials, articles, guides, resources, and publications.
- Monitor legal and public policy developments around the country that impact child support and economic justice responses to victim/survivors and their families.
- Research and write articles on innovative practices and emerging public policy issues in the field of legal responses to intimate partner violence.
- Maintain accurate records for reporting to funder about training and technical assistance activities and assist with reports to funders.
- Develop and maintain relationships with other organizations to partner on projects, substantive legal work, and grant proposals. May include contacts with government entities including funders, and with media.
- Participate in the development of new and continuing grant applications for NLCCDV.
- Attend staff meetings and trainings, as required.
Qualifications:
- Law degree from an ABA accredited law school. Must be licensed to practice in any US jurisdiction and have the ability to provide a certificate of good standing.
- 3 + years of experience in child support Title IV-D and parenting time litigation, preferably on behalf of survivors of domestic violence.
- Experience developing accessible curricula that facilitate adult learning. Experience training at the local, state, or national level preferred.
- Knowledge of the range of legal and social issues involving intimate partner violence.
- Experience working collaboratively with individuals from differing backgrounds.
- Experience working with survivors of intimate partner violence, sexual assault, stalking, and/or human trafficking from traditionally excluded, underrepresented, and/or underserved communities; in particular, victims who are BIPOC and/or LGBTQI+ and living at multiple identity intersections preferred. Experience working with survivors in rural areas a plus.
- Strong communication skills with both legal and non-legal audiences.
- Strong legal research, analytical, and writing skills.
- Ability to exercise independent judgment and handle sensitive, confidential information.
- Ability to travel overnight 4 to 6 times during the year.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and with a team in a remote environment.
- Deep commitment to ending gender-based violence and an understanding of how interpersonal and institutional power, privilege, and oppression affect the lives of domestic and sexual violence survivors. Demonstrated commitment to supporting race equity and cultural humility in prior professional experiences.
